What to do when you’re on Bonaire? Best activities:

Welcome on Bonaire! Bonaire is most known for her beautiful dive sites and coral reefs. We also know that there are a lot of stunning beaches and the sun always shines! But what to do when you are not a diver? Or where to go when you just want to explore the island and go on adventure? Well, we listed a couple of activities that are a must-do when visiting Bonaire.

South tour

You can drive around the island by car or even by (electric) scooter! If you decide to drive down south of the island, you will see a lot of the history of Bonaire besides some beautiful snorkel spots. You can rent a car for this, or book a guided tour. On this roadtrip you will first pass the Saltpier and pink salt flats, but also the historical slavehuts. If you are lucky, you will even spot the famous flamingoes or donkeys alongside the road!

North tour

You can also drive to the other side of the island, towards the north. This landscape totally differs from the south side! Via the Queens Highway you will drive past 1000 steps, Karpata to lake Goto. Here you will see many flamingoes! Eventually, the road will take you into the oldest town of Bonaire, Rincon. Here you can eat local food at Posada Para Mira or even try liquor from a cactus at the Cadushy Distillery!

Donkey Sanctuary

When driving around Bonaire you will most likely see wild donkeys walking on the roads. The Donkey Sanctuary is the place where wounded, sick or orphaned donkeys go. Here they will stay the rest of there life. The Donkey Sanctuary is opened every day for people who want to drive through the sanctuary. From the car you can feed the donkeys or get pictures with them! There is also an Extra Care Meadow, where you can find baby donkeys and donkeys that need extra attention. Stop here if you need some cuddle time!

Washington Slagbaai National Park

In the far north of Bonaire, you can find the National Park Washington Slagbaai. There are 2 different routes that you can follow throughout the park, the short route or the long route. Here you can also do the steepest hike up to the Brandaris. There are some historical sightseeing spots, but also some beautiful beaches where you can snorkel or even dive. If you are looking for some real adventure, you can even jump from a cliff here!

Klein Bonaire

In front of Bonaire, you can find the uninhabited island Klein Bonaire. It’s a small island with a beautiful beach and here you can really enjoy the underwater life while snorkeling. Bring your own food and drinks and have a picnic on the small island. You can take the watertaxi or rent a boat to get to Klein Bonaire.

Mangrove Kayak tour

A really important part of Bonaire and the sea life are the mangroves. The best and most active way to explore these mangroves, is by kayak! The tour will be around 2 hours, but also lets you snorkel and swim in between. The snorkeling between those mangroves shows a whole different world then snorkeling in the ocean!

Windsurfing or kitesurfing.

Bonaire is known to have a lot of wind. This makes the island the perfect place to go windsurfing or kitesurfing. For windsurfing, you can go to one of the surf schools surrounding Lac Bai, called Sorobon. Don’t worry, the water is pretty shallow so it’s easy to get (back) on the board! For kitesurfing, you can go to one of the 2 kitesurf schools at Atlantis (kite) beach.

Boat / snorkel tour

If you like to enjoy a day on the water, you can easily rent a boat and use the mooring lines to go to your favorite snorkel spot. If you like to just sit back and relax, there are a lot of companies that offer boat tours with captain, like Epic Tours or Solobon Sailing. Maybe you even get to see dolphins!

Hiking

Not many people know about this, but there are a lot of beautiful hiking trails to wander through nature. The trails are marked with pink rocks, so it’s easy to follow it by yourself. It is also possible to go with a guide. The most popular trails are Red Hill Hike, Mount Montana and Dos Pos Hike. And then there is also the steep hike up to the Brandaris in the National Park.
